The optimum staff to child ratio for our groups is one adult for every three children and our target ages are three to eight years of age. Our social skills groups are run by a licensed and certified speech and language pathologist. We feel that having a speech and language pathologist who understands the language based needs of children with autism and pragmatic language delays is extremely important to the learning process. Our social skills groups use a combination of Social Skills Stories with the addition of a social skills program called Model Me Kids. This program involves using short video clips of children talking about a social skill and then practicing that social skill. The children present the skill in a social story format and the video demonstrates the skills drawing attention to appropriate eye contact, body language and verbal language. On our own we practice the skills within different social interactive activities. A sample social story of each lesson is sent home at the close of each class.
Our social skills classes are run in a series. The three different sets or series we are running in the fall include: "Time for a Playdate", "Time for School", and "I can do it". Examples of topics covered within the series include: greet a friend, share, guest chooses, stay with a friend, losing is okay, answering, taking turns, play his way, cleaning up and saying good bye, sharing, taking turns, keeping my hands to myself, saying sorry, sitting quietly, raise my hand, show interest in others, self calming techniques, and playground behavior.
Each week a new topic will be addressed. Should the speech pathologist feel that an additional week on the same topic would be beneficial to all members of the group, a continuation of the topic will be considered. The grouping of children who participate may vary over time depending on the various ability levels and individual needs of each child.
